Thalassery-style Chicken Kakkathil Cooked with Bold Kerala Flavours
Some dishes don’t just fill the stomach; they demand your full attention. Thalassery Chicken Kakkathil is one such recipe. It’s aromatic and flavour-packed, and makes everyone in the house peek into the kitchen and say, “What’s that amazing smell?”
But here’s the magic:
This dish shines only when the coconut oil does its job right. And that’s where Coco Mama’s virgin coconut oil changes the entire story.
Unlike regular coconut oils that feel heavy or lose their aroma when heated, Coco Mama’s virgin coconut oil stays light and naturally fragrant, giving the chicken its signature Kerala-style richness without overpowering the spices. It heats faster, blends better with masalas, and brings out that deep roasted flavour Thalassery dishes are famous for.
Now let’s bring this Kerala gem to your kitchen.
Ingredients:
- 500g chicken leg pieces
- 2 sliced onions
- 1-3 sprigs of curry leaves
- 2 roughly chopped tomatoes
- 1 tbsp ginger garlic paste
- 2 green chillies
- 1-2 tbsp ghee
- 3 tsp red chilli powder
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 1 tsp garam masala
- 1/4 tsp black pepper powder
- 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
- Salt (as per your taste)
- 5 tablespoons of Coco Mama’s virgin coconut oil
Method:
Step 1: Combine Everything in One Pot
Place the chicken legs in a heavy-bottomed pot. Add onions, tomatoes, green chilli, curry leaves, ginger-garlic paste, and all the spice powders. Sprinkle in the salt as per your taste and pour about 1/4 cup of water. Use your hand to mix thoroughly so the chicken absorbs all those flavours.
Step 2: Let the Chicken Cook
Cover the pot and let it simmer on medium heat. In about 15 minutes, the chicken will soften and release juices to help the masala come together naturally.
Step 3: Fry in Virgin Coconut Goodness
Warm 5 tbsp of Coco Mama’s virgin coconut oil in a deep pan. Lift out the chicken pieces and fry them briefly, just enough for the outer layer to turn slightly crisp. This step builds that signature Kakkathil taste.
Step 4: Bring It All Back Together
Transfer the fried chicken back into the cooking mixture. Allow the gravy to thicken and reduce until the colour deepens into a rich red shade and the masala clings beautifully to the meat.
Step 5: Serve Fresh and Hot
Finish with freshly chopped coriander and enjoy with chapathi, rice pathiri, dosa, wheat dosa or warm rotis.
Some dishes taste nice, and some dishes make the whole house stop for a moment. Thalassery-style chicken kakkathil is one of those dishes. When the gravy gets darker and the smell fills the kitchen, you can feel something special happening, which is hard to resist.
And when you make it with Coco Mama’s virgin coconut oil, that magic becomes even stronger. The spices open up, the chicken tastes deeper, and the aroma spreads through the home like a soft reminder of Kerala’s shores.
By the time you bring it to the table, it doesn’t feel like just another meal. It feels like a memory, and that’s the beauty of cooking a classic Kerala recipe with an oil that carries the true taste of pure coconut.
